Best Of Roatan Island

Explore the undeveloped east end of Roatan from the comfort of an air-conditioned vehicle. Experience the unique landscape and the local culture as your guide briefs you on the history of Roatan and the Bay Islands. Board an island-style boat for a pleasant, narrated trip through the historic two-mile-long Dixon Cove Harbor with its keys, reefs and visible shipwrecks. At the Garifuna Experience, meet members of the Garifuna, descendents of Black Carib Indians who settled here in 1797. They will demonstrate their music and dance, which have been preserved over hundreds of years.

As soon as you depart the harbor you'll start to enjoy the charm and scenery of this dual personality island which has been flying the flags of both Holland and France since 1648. You'll drive from Phillipsburg, the Dutch capital, past the Great Salt Pond and through the countryside. The tour then continues past the Border Monument indicating arrival at the French side, into the district of Orleans. Sightseeing continues through several quaint towns and fishing villages, including Grand Case known for its lovely beaches and exquisite restaurants, then across the north side of the island for a short stop at Marigot, the French capital, where you'll observe a truly European atmosphere as you browse its waterside open-air markets, quaint shops, boutiques and sidewalk cafes. After your brief sojourn in Marigot you'll return to the Dutch side and a truly spectacular view of Simpson Bay as you drive over Cole Bay Hill. Note: Participants must be able to manage three steps into and out of the bus. Wheelchair access may be limited - for details, please consult your Shore Excursion staff before booking. On public holidays all stores and shops will be closed in Marigot.

View the city of Roseau from a 400-feet elevation before continuing to the Botanical Gardens for a view of some of the world's most exotic trees and rare birds, the Sisserou and Jaco parrots. Move on to the village of Trafalgar and to the Trafalgar Falls, one of Dominica's most fascinating and picturesque areas. You will have a unique view of the falls, as it cascades side by side out of deep gorges. Your guide will lead you on a 10-minute trek to the viewing platform of these majestic waterfalls. Next, pass through the city of Roseau, traveling up the Springfield Valley to the Trois Pitons National Park. You will soon arrive at the Emerald Pool for a 15-minute trek through the rainforest to the 40-foot cascading waterfall, the Emerald Pool. Note: Rain is frequent in the rainforest, so raingear and sturdy walking shoes are recommended.

San Juan City Tour

Enjoy a guided drive through one of the most beautiful cities in the Caribbean with its 17th century architecture and historical buildings. You will have the opportunity to stroll around the grounds of the biggest fortification built by the Spaniards in the New World on your self guided visit to Fort San Cristobal. Come see its Main Plaza, "Garitas" watchtowers and authentic mortal balls. Re-board your bus and continue your guided tour to the New City, which will take you to the Condado District, filled with high-rise condos and luxury resorts. A stop is made at one of the beautiful beaches and the Capitol Building for pictures. Return to Old San Juan where you'll visit the famous Plaza Colón. Here you may choose to stay to explore the local surroundings and enjoy some shopping or return to the ship. Take a step back in time and enjoy this captivating journey through history. Note: We recommend you wear comfortable walking shoes, bring a hat and sunscreen. Due to walking required at the fort, the activity level is substantial. The fort is not wheelchair accessible. There is a steep ramp to access the fort (about 65 paces one way). The first level features the barracks, gun rooms, and video presentation. The next level requires walking up another steep ramp (about 35 paces one way). Accessing the third level observation ports for the best views of the city requires going up another steep ramp (about 65 paces one way). Some of the stops are unguided allowing guests to browse on their own. Traffic in old and new San Juan can be congested. Alternate routes are implemented whenever possible. From the pier, board a speedboat and after a safety briefing, begin an ecological experience. Known for having one the lushest rainforests and mangrove reserves in the Caribbean, Los Haitises National Park is a beautiful sanctuary. You'll circle the small cay known as 'Bird Island' as your guide explains the importance of the many migratory and indigenous birds that inhabit the island. Your Captain will dock the boat at an area of captivating caves and your guide will provide information on the people that inhabited these caves and the islands. Cave drawings representing the gods and the daily life of the Taino Indians will give you a glimpse into the life of these ancient people. You'll also see beautiful stalagmites and stalactites which have formed over centuries. Note: Participants must be able to navigate uneven surfaces. This tour is not recommended for pregnant women. Wear comfortable clothing, closed-toe footwear or Teva®-type sandals.

Depart your ship for a thirty minute drive through the quaint countryside to the "Lushan Country Life" attraction which Mother Nature has blessed abundantly and is home to numerous birds, butterflies, beautiful tropical flora, fauna, local herbs and much more. This unique attraction gives one the opportunity to walk along a forest trail amidst lush towering trees with colorful birds and butterflies while enjoying the splendor and majesty of an island forest in the company of a forest guide. Enjoy spectacular scenery as you taste a variety of fresh fruits. See, smell, touch, taste and learn about our way of life in bygone days. Visit the authentic Creole Kitchen and sample island delicacies made right there. Then it's on to Beacon Point, which offers breathtaking island views from the observation platform. Stop at Skyline overlook to see the historic harbor of Charlotte Amalie 800 feet above your cruise ship. Next, enjoy views of heart-shaped, palm-fringed Megan's Bay (one of the top 10 beaches in the world) from Drake's Seat before continuing to St. Peter Great House and Botanical Gardens, once the haunt of the rich and famous. This is a magnificent Caribbean estate, featuring stunning views, classic Caribbean architecture and vintage furnishings in a beautiful, tropical setting. Enjoy a refreshing complimentary rum or fruit punch and stroll the lush grounds, perched 1,000 feet above the ocean that is home to more than 100 varieties of tropical fauna. It's new, it's big and it's fun for the entire family! Come play at Aquaventure, the centerpiece of the Atlantis Resort's recent billion-dollar development. Containing over 20 million gallons of water, this non-stop water experience consists of thrilling new water slides, a mile long river ride with high intensity rapids, wave surges, and never-before-seen special effects. The excursion also includes access to the huge, open-air marine habitat where you can find over 50,000 fascinating sea creatures. Whether you prefer a thrilling ride through a shark filled pool or a gentle float on a never ending lagoon, you'll find it at Atlantis.


Note: Participants ages 3 years of age or younger receive free admission if accompanied by a participating paying adult (parent or guardian at least 18 years of age). There is a considerable amount of walking on this tour, approximately 0.4 mile. Participants must be at least 48" tall to ride the water slides. Lounge chairs, towels and life jackets are provided. Non-motorized water sports are available for rent. Guests should bring a credit card for drink and food purchases. The transportation for this tour is by bus, approximately 25 minutes each way depending on traffic conditions. Guests participating on an Atlantis Shore Excursion must arrive at the place and time stated on the Shore Excursion ticket. Atlantis tour tickets will not be honored at the resort. The last transfer back to the ship will be one hour before sailing time. Special rates are only available for ports of call dates (not sail dates), during the month of May 2013. This tour is only available on Norwegian Sky and Norwegian Gem.
